What? There’s a MoVida opening in Perth?
Only after uploading the pic did I realise what this Polaroid (taken in 2008 while having lunch at Melbourne’s MoVida) could be inferred as, but since we didn’t have a camera with us for our visit to Perth’s newest tapas bar Andaluz, I had to dig into the archives.

I suspect that similar to the opening of the swanky but pricey 1907, once word of Andaluz (it’s on Howard Street around the corner from Balthazar) gets around, getting into the new tapas bar, particularly come Friday arvos after work, could be quite a feat.
Unlike the swanky Queen Street 1907, the bar and eating areas at Andaluz aren’t separated so there’s every risk that if you drop in on a busy night, you’ll get a side order of heaping noise with your meal. Shame, as the intimate, private spaces the owners have fashioned out of the former office blocks lend themselves more to quiet one-on-one rendezvous than straight up debauchery.
In addition to an international beer, wine and cocktail selection (made using top shelf imported spirits), Andaluz also serves top notch Iberian tapa food all day long. Chef Brenton Pyke (formerly at Just in Como) is at the helm in the kitchen and is doing great things though the highlight on the menu – the Joselito Gran Reserva Jamon Iberico – ironically involves little work on his part. He simple slices it off the leg and lets it warm up in the kitchen to unlock all those delicious nutty, salty flavours before serving it to customers. It’s a bit pricey at $25 for a plate with about 10-12 slices, but for the ham connoisseur, I feel it’s money well spent.

Hey Max,
I dropped by Andaluz the other night for a look. Had already eaten so I just got a baked orange and cinnamon creme caramel and a glass of some Spanish dessert wine I don’t quite remember. Creme caramel was suburb, but the wine was fairly ordinary (and the wine list could be a lot more interesting).
Will be interesting to see how it goes though, the food all looked and sounded good, and it’s an interesting little place. I can see it being popular.

Hey Max,
I think if you are going to write about a place, you should have a pic of the venue, how embarrassing..heheh…!
Beside that, I went to Andaluz for tapas and drinks, i get what u say about the music and noise, but then again it IS a bar, not a restaurant!..The Norwegian waiter that looked after us was great, we were quite indesicive about what to have, but he suggested to let him order us a frew dishes, organise the wine to go with the tapas…Once we did that, we had the best time and found the level of noise fine.. After all it is a Bar!!

Gday George,
Thanks for stopping by and the comments. You’re right about the picture. I was in a rush to get the post up and the night we decided to check out Andaluz I was without a camera, so hurriedly trawled through what I had at hand for a suitable shot. I’ll try and replace the shot for accuracy’s sake and so it’s compatible with the new theme.
Glad to hear you had a good time. For me, (out of place and unexpected) noise is one of the biggest turn-offs of a restaurant or really any where for that matter. I haven’t been on a Friday night but have been told by many that noise levels are right up there. More power to those who are happy to go there while it’s a bar, having to shout to have a conversation with who I’m there with isn’t my sort of thing!
