About

AceHighWine is a collection of thoughts on food, wine and poker.
Reflecting the geographic location of the blog’s author, AceHighWine has a proud West Australian bias but also contains information on other regional gastro-spots.
The blog was started after a game of cards in December 2005 and has undergone different directions and looks over the years, so please forgive some of the older posts if they look odd in the new theme introduced in September 2009. If time allows, they will be updated to comply with the blog’s new format.
After a malicious coding attack rendered the blog lame, the technical nous of one Abstract Gourmet has pulled AHW back from the abyss and returned it to its rightful place in the largely-ignored quadrants of the Blog-o-sphere.
While it’s tempting to go back through the archives and remove embarrassing entries, I’ve decided to leave them up in the interests of posterity and to remind myself of how far my writing has come and how far it still has to go. I cringe a little bit with some of the old poker blogs, but looking back as a jaded card player at my ramblings when I was a poker fan-boy is kind of entertaining.
The blah blah blah
AceHighWine is maintained by Max Veenhuyzen, a West Australian-based freelance journalist and former deputy editor at Scoop magazine who specialises in food and wine writing.
If there are big lulls between posts, it’s probably because he’s flat out filing copy in his capacity as West Australian state editor for Australian Gourmet Traveller or meeting a (likely epicurean) deadline for titles such as Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine, The West Australian and Scoop that he regularly writes for. Alternatively, he might just be spending too much time on Twitter, eating, drinking, in the garden or with mates.
