The third pinot release from this Hunter Valley winery using fruit sourced from the Tamar Valley in Tasmania. There’s a whack of cedar and an abundance of spice on the nose, but when revisited the day after, the oak influence had largely dissipated, leaving in its wake plenty of cherry and strawberry remnants. On first tasting, the wine felt rich, thick and admittedly not all that varietally correct in the mouth, but its saving grace was the quality of its fruit and pristine red berry flavours that shone right through the long finish. When given 18 hours in the bottle, the richness had been replaced by that lovely suppleness I associate with all good pinot noir. A drop that will need at least another two years (drink 2009) in the bottle or plenty of time in a decanter to show at its best. An earthier and more savoury ‘04 Yarra Valley pinot is also produced by the winery and is also worth checking out. www.towerestatewines.com.au
